MMDS Triple Play SystemOverviewFor many communities a MMDS Triple Play service is the ideal digital television, voice and broadband internet delivery mechanism. MMDS Triple Play platforms provide a low upfront cost for network operators to reach a community quickly and benefit from the increased revenue of offering these in demand services to end users. MMDS Triple Play system services include digital television delivery (DVB-T), Voice Over IP (VoIP) telephony and two way internet access services. A complete system involves integration between head end, transmission and customer premises hardware.
Head-End EquipmentThe head-end equipment can be broken down into two main categories. The digital television head-end and the Internet and VoIP head-end. The digital television head-end supplies MPEG-2 encoded video and audio from live television feeds and optionally a video server system for VOD or other pre-recorded content. The encoded streams are multiplexed into a DVB compliant MPEG-2 Transport stream and delivered to the transmission site as ASI streams. The ASI streams can be delivered to the transmission site through a variety of distribution networks including IP networks, microwave link and satellite delivery. Availability and price are determining factors. The Internet and VoIP head-end contain the data processing and back office interfaces for the triple play network. These include Electronic program guide and conditional access servers for the digital television service as well as the data services tools. The data services tools include the SIP telephone manager for VoIP traffic management and processing, the VoIP gateway to the outside switched telephone infrastructure and the Element Manager. The Element Manager is a sophisticated computer based control system for setup and control of all network parameters including RF parameters, DOCSIS parameters, SNMP interfaces to the UBwave DVB-T/H Modulators and overall system monitoring. The Internet and VoIP head end requires a robust IP network connection exceeding the total bandwidth of the wireless data network >30Mbit/sec to the DOCSIS 2.0 Wireless Modem Termination System at the transmission site. Transmitter SiteThe digital television component utilizes UBwaveDVB-T/H series modulators. Each modulator usually supplies 8 high quality SD video channels into 6Mhz of bandwidth. These modulators are paired to UBwaveMMDS transmitters. The wireless Internet and Voice over Internet (VoIP) signals use the Wireless Modem Termination System based on DOCSIS 1.0,1.1 and 2.0 standards. This standard is widely used in the cable industry to deliver Internet and VoIP service. The Internet/Voice equipment is IP based and will deliver Ethernet type traffic. The VoIP service relies on SIP protocol phones at the customer premises. The DOCSIS 2.0 Wireless Modem Termination System usually transmits via single UBwaveMMDS transmitters typically occupying 6Mhz of spectrum. The return channels for the Internet and VoIP signals are provided through the MDS 90 deg sector receiver antenna to a UBS Broadtell-II Quad Receiver and delivered to the DOCSIS 2.0 Wireless Modem Termination System. Computer based control system for setup and control of all network parameters including RF parameters, DOCSIS parameters, SNMP interfaces to the UBwave DVB-T/H Modulators and overall system monitoring. The Internet and VoIP head end requires a robust IP network connection exceeding the total bandwidth of the wireless data network >30Mbit/sec to the DOCSIS 2.0 Wireless Modem Termination System at the transmission site. Customer premises equipmentThe end customer sees three pieces of equipment in their interaction with the service. Their television programming is delivered via the DVB-T set top box. Their telephone service is delivered via the DOCSIS Modem and VoIP SIP telephone. Their Internet access is delivered via an Ethernet interface on their SIP telephone equipment. These three devices are interfaced through an RF splitter to the MMDS/MDS Transceiver which connects to the customer premises receive/transmit antenna.
